Coal is cool: Solution for less pollution

Coal 's role in electricity generation worldwide
Modern life is unimaginable without electricity. It lights houses, buildings, streets, provides domestic and industrial heat, and powers most equipment used in homes, offices and machinery in factories. Improving access to electricity worldwide is critical to alleviating poverty.

Coal plays a vital role in electricity generation worldwide. Coal-fired power plants currently fuel 41% of global electricity and, in some countries, coal fuels a higher percentage of electricity.

How is coal converted to electricity?

Steam coal, also known as thermal coal, is used in power stations to generate electricity. Coal is first milled to a fine powder, which increases the surface area and allows it to burn more quickly. In these pulverised coal combustion (PCC) systems, the powdered coal is blown into the combustion chamber of a boiler where it is burnt at high temperature (see diagram). The hot gases and heat energy produced converts water – in tubes lining the boiler – into steam.

The high pressure steam is passed into a turbine containing thousands of propeller-like blades. The steam pushes these blades causing the turbine shaft to rotate at high speed. A generator is mounted at one end of the turbine shaft and consists of carefully wound wire coils. Electricity is generated when these are rapidly rotated in a strong magnetic field. After passing through the turbine, the steam is condensed and returned to the boiler to be heated once again.

The electricity generated is transformed into the higher voltages (up to 400,000 volts) used for economic, efficient transmission via power line grids. When it nears the point of consumption, such as our homes, the electricity is transformed down to the safer 100-250 voltage systems used in the domestic market.
Global Warming: A global warning

One of the biggest problems facing the world today is global warming. Many scientists believe that our production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is having a heating effect on the atmosphere, and this could be very dangerous for human life. This essay will examine the problem of global warming and suggest some ways of solving the problem.

Many problems could result from global warming. One of the biggest problems is rising sea level. This could result in the flooding of low lying coastal areas and cities, such as Egypt, the Netherlands, and Bangladesh. Some countries might even disappear completely! Another problem caused by global warming is changes in weather patterns. Many areas of the world are experiencing increased hurricanes, floods, and other unusual weather. A third problem associated with global warming is the effect on animals. Fish populations could be affected, while some insects which spread disease might become more common.

There are several things we can do to solve the problem of global warming. One solution is to stop producing C02. We can do this by switching from oil, coal and gas to renewable energy. Another solution is to plant more trees. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, which is not a greenhouse gas. A third solution is to use less energy and to recycle more products. Generating electricity is one of the main sources of carbon dioxide. If we use less electricity, we will produce less C02.

In conclusion, if we make small changes now in the way we live, we can avoid huge changes in the future. Scientists, governments and individuals must work together to overcome this threat.
Reduction of Garbage and Waste Material

Sometimes people are lazy to throw their garbage on the bin, they throw it here, there and everywhere. It can cause flood when rainy days come. There is one saying that, "Ang basurang itinapon mo ay babalik sayo ng mas higit pa sa tinapon mo". We know the causes if we don't throw our waste materials properly but then sometimes we didn't do the right thing. And we also know that it also affect our health because of its smell. So we should reduce the things that we use that causes a lot of materials that will be wasted and before we throw it away we should check first if we can reuse it, recycle it and then we reduce using it.

Garbage is an unwanted waste material. It is the stuff we don’t need any more. Everyday we make tons of solid waste. It makes our environment unhealthy
Any waste material like cans, bottles, paper, kitchen waste and plastic bags are called garbage. There are things which can be reused, but we throw them away.
First of all, as kids we can tell our parents, neighbors and classmates about reducing the amount of garbage they throw away. We can collect all the things which can be recycled, like cans, paper, plastic bags and bottles. Before we throw the things away, first look for what we can reuse and then look for what we can recycle and then leave the rest as garbage.
For waste reduction, avoid disposable things. We should not use too much paper towels and bathroom tissue. Use cloth towel instead. Cloth bags can be used for shopping.
